group of people. There were quite a few people posting their views about
webrings, which was a topic in which I had an interest. The community
was closely knit and virtually everyone enjoyed themselves.

banning people right and left, perhaps they should step down and let
someone else hold the reigns.

In fact, a good indicator of a moderator who is out ethics is a vast
number of posts from the moderator attempting to explain his actions,
and a large number of posts from others (sometimes on other message
boards) who have things to say against the moderator. Note that
sometimes this is not bad - a good moderator may have to ban or annoy
someone once in a while.

The key indication is that the topic of the message board changes to
protecting the message board. In addition if the moderators seem to be
spending most of their time keeping out individuals and deleting posts,
then perhaps they need to take a hard look at their ethics.

It’s as simple as that. Good message boards almost run themselves, and
the effort required by the moderator to keep it going smoothly and
on-topic is minimal. Bad message boards require huge amounts of effort
by the moderators and become barren wastelands in short order. There are
few things on the internet that are more sad than a once-proud message
board reduced to rubble by an incompetent or malicious moderator.

In this article, I explore different methods by which you can
improve the link popularity of your site. I start with a method
that you shouldn’t bother using, then go on to the moderately
effective methods, and then end with the most effective methods
you can use to boost the link popularity of your site.

1) Submitting your site to Free For All (FFA) pages

A common misconception among many Internet marketers is that
while FFA pages may not directly bring in traffic to your site,
it will help to improve the link popularity of your site, and
hence, will indirectly bring in traffic through the search
engines.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Most FFA pages can
contain only a certain number of links at a time. This means
that when you submit your site to a FFA page, your site will be
placed at the top of the page. However, as more and more people
submit their sites to the FFA page, your site will be pushed
down, and finally, when it reaches the bottom of the page, it
will be removed.

Now, since you can bet that plenty of other people are also
submitting their sites to the FFA pages, your site will remain
in these pages for only a short span of time. Hence, in order to
ensure that the search engines see your site if and when they
come to spider the FFA page, you will need to ensure that you
submit your site to these FFA pages on a regular basis - at
least once a week.

Even if you used an automatic submission program to do it, can
you imagine a worse way to spend your time and/or money?
Furthermore, many search engines recognize these pages which
only contains links to other sites as FFA pages and may
completely ignore them. And while I haven’t yet seen any
evidence that submitting to the FFA pages will actually penalize
your site, there is every possibility that this might happen in
the future.

Hence, when it comes to FFA pages, my advice is simple: don’t
even think about them.

2) Starting an Awards Program

A moderately effective method of improving the link popularity
of your site is to start an awards program. You can have web
sites which are related to yours apply for an award from your
site. The sites which win the award get the chance to display
the logo for your award. This logo is linked to your site,
preferably to a page which contains more information on the
award.

If you publish a newsletter, consider declaring the winners in
your newsletter. You can also perform a review of the winners’
sites in your newsletter. This adds useful content to your
newsletter and also gives more webmasters the incentive to apply
for your award, since you may review their sites in your
newsletter. This also gives them the incentive to subscribe to
your newsletter to see if they win the award.

Make sure that you give awards to only those sites which deserve
to win. If you give your award to sites which don’t deserve it,
your award will have little credibility, which will, in turn,
hurt the credibility of your company. Furthermore, make sure
that the logo you design for the award looks professional. If it
doesn’t, not many webmasters will want to display it in their
sites.

3) Giving testimonials

This may sound a bit unusual, but giving testimonials for
products or services which you find useful can be another
moderately effective way of improving the link popularity of
your site. If you really like a product, simply write to the
company and tell them why you liked the product so much and how
it has helped you. Chances are, the company will write back to
you to thank you for your comments and will ask you for
permission to display your comments in their web site. Tell the
company that you have no problems if they publish your comments,
but request them to add a link to your site along with the
testimonial. There is every possibility that the company will
agree since publishing the URL of your web site gives more
credibility to the testimonial.

Of course, please don’t go about giving testimonials to every
company you can locate just because it will improve your link
popularity :-)

4) Posting to Message Boards and Discussion Lists

Another moderately effective method of increasing the link
popularity of your site is to post to online message boards. At
the end of every message that you post, you can sign off by
mentioning your name and the URL of your web site. If the
message board allows it, you can even include a short
promotional blurb about your site at the end of your posts.
However, make sure that the individual messages that are posted
to that message board are archived in static HTML pages (i.e.
the URLs for the individual messages should not contain a “?”).
Otherwise, the search engines will consider these pages to be
dynamic pages and may not spider these pages and hence, will not
be able to find your link.

Email based discussion lists which are archived on the web in
static HTML pages can also be used to boost the link popularity
of your site in a similar manner. In this case, the signature
file that you use with your email program should contain the URL
for your web site.

5) Starting a Link Contest

A good method of improving the link popularity of your site is
to give away prizes to other webmasters if they link to you. The
prizes that you give out should ideally be something which other
webmasters will find valuable enough to want to link to you, but
which do not cost you too much. For instance, if you publish a
newsletter, and have unsold ad inventory, you can give away some
free advertisements in your newsletter to the winners. If you
sell a software (or an ebook), you can give away a free copy of
your software or ebook to the winners, since it doesn’t cost you
anything to produce an additional copy of digital goods like
software and ebooks.

Link contests work best if you run the contest on a continuous
basis and if you declare new winners frequently. If you run the
contest for a few months, and then stop it, the webmasters who
had linked to you will all remove their links. However, if you
run it on a continuous basis, and declare new winners every
month or so, the webmasters will have the incentive to keep
their links to your site.

Also, make sure that you require all participants to have a link
to your site either in their home page, or in an internal page
of their site which is linked to their home page. Also ensure
that the page which contains the link is no more than two levels
deep from their home page (i.e. it should not take more than two
clicks to go from the home page to the page containing the
link). If they don’t do this, the search engine spiders may not
index the page which contains the link to your site, and hence,
may not find your link.

6) Writing articles and allowing them to be re-published

This is by far one of the best ways of improving the link
popularity of your site, and one of my favorites. Whenever I
write an article on search engine placement, I first publish it
in my newsletter and then I publish the article in my site as a
separate web page. I also submit it to the following article
submission sites:

http://www.ideamarketers.com
http://www.marketing-seek.com/articles/submit.shtml
http://certificate.net/wwio/ideas.shtml
http://www.web-source.net/articlesub.htm

Many webmasters and ezine publishers frequent these article
directories in search of articles. Submitting my articles to
these directories gives them the opportunity of re-publishing my
articles. While I have had some success with each of the above
directories, by far the best among them is the ezinearticles.com
directory.

Now, at the end of each article, I mention that people are free
to re-publish the article as long as they include my resource
box (i.e. my bio) at the end of the article. I always include
the URL of my site in the resource box. This means that whenever
someone publishes one of my articles in his/her web site, I have
another site linking to my site. Also, many ezine publishers
archive their ezines in their web sites. If they have
re-published my article in a particular issue, I again get a
link.

Writing articles is also an excellent viral marketing tool. As
some webmasters and ezine publishers publish my articles, other
webmasters and ezine publishers will read my article. Some of
them, in turn, will publish my article, which will again be read
by other webmasters and ezine publishers, some of whom will
publish it… and so on.

Also, since only web sites related to mine would be interested
in publishing my articles, all these links tend to come from
related sites, which, as I mentioned earlier, are more valuable
than links from unrelated sites.

Writing articles, of course, has another very important benefit
- if you write good articles, it makes you known as an expert in
your field. This helps to improve your credibility, which makes
people more comfortable about buying your products or services.

before, what is important is not only the number of links to

links are as important as links from some of the major
directories like Yahoo!, the Open Directory etc. However, Yahoo!
currently requires a payment of $299 per year in order to list
any commercial site. Paying them $299 per year just to improve
your link popularity is probably not cost effective. But, the
Open Directory is free, and you should definitely get your site
listed in the Open Directory.

Also, you should submit your site to as many of the smaller
directories as possible. You can get a list of such directories
at

8) Exchanging links with other webmasters

The single-most effective way of improving the link popularity
of your site is to exchange links with other webmasters who have
sites which are related to yours, but are not direct
competitors. This is called reciprocal linking.

However, the problem with this method is the sheer amount of
time it takes if you were to do it manually.

If you decide to do this manually, you can easily expect to
spend hundreds of hours on this activity alone.

Here’s what you need to do:

i) You need to use the search engines to find sites related to
yours that are not direct competitors by typing in some keywords
that are related to your site.

ii) You also need to find sites that link to your competitors.

Be Aware of Phishing Scams!

If you use emails actively in your communication, you must have received various messages claiming to be from Ebay, Paypal and a number of banks. A recent email as if from U.S. Bank Corporation that I received contains the subject “U.S. Bank Fraud Verification Process” and in the body of the mail it says “We recently reviewed your account, and suspect that your U.S. Bank Internet Banking account may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party. Protecting the security of your account and of the U.S. Bank network is our primary concern. Therefore, as a preventative measure, we have temporarily limited access to sensitive account features. To restore your account access, please take the following steps to ensure that your account has not been compromised:”. It continues with a link to a webpage, which looks very similar to original web page of the bank.

The misleading web site appears authentic with familiar graphics and logos. The wordings are professional right down to the legal disclaimer at the bottom of the page.

If you happened to be holding an account of the claimed bank, followed the instructions of the email and input your account, pin, password, etc. you are doomed. You just have handed over access to your account to a con artist, who, in a matter of days, will drain off all the money available in that account.

This new scam, which is proliferating in a very rapid pace, is called “Phishing”. Phishing is a form of identity theft, where a con artist with the help of official looking email containing link to phony web pages capable of harvesting information, tricks an unsuspecting victim into divulging sensitive personal data. Scammers use these data to bilk victims out of their savings.

One of the most common phishing campaigns being waged has targeted users of Web auction giant eBay and its PayPal division with financial services giant Citibank serving as another popular target. However, recently, every major bank has been hit with this scam. Crooks send out huge amounts of emails with an expectation that some of these email address owners may have online access to their accounts at the bank.

The term “Phishing” is a deviation of the word “Fishing”. In hackers lexicon, in many words, “F” becomes “Ph”. The term derives from the fact that scammers use sophisticated bait as they “fish” for users personal information.

According to Gartner, a research firm, illegal access to checking accounts gained via phishing has become into the fastest growing type of consumer theft in the United States. Roughly 1.98 million people reported that their checking account was breached in one way or another during the last year and US$ 2.4 billion were defrauded from the victims!

Gartner also estimated that 57 million U.S. Internet users have received phishing emails and 3 percent of them may have fooled into revealing their personal sensitive information.

The Anti-Phishing Working Group has also spotted a dramatic increase in reports of phishing attacks in recent months. Since November, 2003 phishing scams increase by about 110 percent each month. In April alone, the group identified 1125 unique phishing scams, a sharp lift of 178 percent from the previous month.

A new Windows worm under the name “Korgo” is able to infiltrate into victim s system with a key logging Trojan, steal information that the victim input in web forms and secretly transmit to designated server. There are a number of variants of this worm and they are spreading rapidly. However, Microsoft in April came up with a patch to seal this glitch. Many computers without the patch are still vulnerable to this potentially dangerous worm.

A U.S. Treasury report provides consumers with steps to prevent and report phishing scams:

  • Do not respond to or open any e-mail that warns that an account is about to be closed. Contact the company directly by phone and inquire of this e-mail.

  • Do not submit financial information unless there is a symbol for a locked padlock on the browser’s status bar. Also look for the https:// at the beginning of the Web address. If both of these signs are absent, the Web site is not secure.

  • Always review your bank statement and credit card statements immediately upon receipt.

  • Verify the domestic telephone number listed on the Web site through directory assistance or other reliable sources and call the number. Many phishing attacks have originated outside the U.S. and don’t have a domestic number.

  • Report suspicious activity or if you have been defrauded to the FTC and the FBI.

  • Phishing e-mails can be forwarded to uce@ftc.gov. Complaints can be filed atwww.ftc.gov. Phishing attacks can also be reported to the Internet Fraud Complaint Center at www.ifccfbi.gov.

Other cautionary measures you should take in order to protect yourself are:

  • Since most of the phishing emails come through spam, get a spam filter and install on your computer.

  • If you suspect a phishing attempt, report immediately to the bank. Every bank web site has a link or a toll-free number to report scams. 8. Publisher Swaps - This promotion method is
exclusive to Ezine and newsletter publishers,
and is, whereby, publishers trade ads with each
other to be placed in their respective publications

publications. The Ezine Directory should provide
some, if not all, information regarding it. Or, you

Common Decency……Let’s Keep it Alive!

I recently had an experience with one of the affiliate programs I *was* involved with. This experience did not surprise me, but did however, disappoint me. It is a sad fact that it did not surprise me and I thought maybe an article on this subject might bring it to our attention.

I did willingly join this program and accept the terms of which I do understand. However, when customers of this online business owner would email me with complaints about the product and the fact that the owner would not answer any emails, I definitely had to think twice about promoting this product and affiliate program.

So having decided this, I wrote the owner and asked if he could send me the small amount owed to me. I informed him I would not be promoting his product or program any longer and would like what was owed to me. His reasoning was, he would not pay me because I joined the program willingly and he had a minimum amount.

This I had to accept while thinking, “Wouldn’t common decency dictate paying the small amount he owed to a former affiliate?” The money itself does not change my life in anyway of course, but the human side of this really bothers me.

I will credit him with being polite and professional in his emails, and I also did not get upset, but thanked him for the learning experience. I also stated that I would in no way run my affiliate program in that way.

Common decency would prohibit me from doing so.

I realize we are running businesses and need to make money, but do we throw away courtesy, decency, respect and consideration to do so? I think not!

I know I am not the only person this has happened to, as a matter of fact, it has happened to me twice. The first time being a much bigger amount. The program owner just dropped out of business and left his affiliates hanging.

As a whole, the people I have been lucky enough to “meet” online have all been wonderful, caring, helpful, respectful and decent. When I first started online, that fact was a wonderfully pleasant discovery! Over time however, I did run into a few people who needed to learn common decency.

So if you run a business/affiliate program, do not let money be your first priority, make people number one and the money will follow. If you owe somebody money/service. etc., pay them. If your affiliate decides to “resign” from your program show them your good faith and common decency. Pay them what you owe, even if the amount does not reach your “minimum”!

Their reasons for “resigning” might be totally false in your eyes, but you still owe them what they did sell for you. Common decency prohibits me from “blabbing” the product/program I had this problem with, but it is no longer on my site and if people ask me about this specific product/program, I will tell them the truth.

I am not out to get this guy, but cannot recommend a product/program that I know does business in this manner.

I usually don’t write this type of “venting” article, but this topic is so very important, I thought I would make an exception.

So let’s think about when we are dealing with customers, subscribers, Newbies, associates, affiliates, etc., we need to keep common decency and respect alive. Do not lose sight of our fellow human beings so we can have a few extra bucks in our pocket!
